Question 1: YES. Nodebox is an ideal tool for such a thing. But it's not easy.
Question 2: You are in luck: I can help.
Your timing is excellent. I have much experience using Nodebox to create org charts (similar to genealogical charts) in my former job. I just retired and one of the first personal projects I intend to pursue is to use NodeBox to create a family chart of one of my ancestors. Working on a chart for you would help me finish my own chart.
Normally I would give you a few pointers and let you go at it. But as I said, these charts are tricky to make. I think it would be easier for both of us if you give me your data and let me take a stab at it. I can then give you whatever chart I come up with along with the Nodebox code. You can then modify that to your heart's content to perfect the chart of your dreams.
If this sounds good to you, the first order of business would be to send me your data in the form of a CSV (spreadsheet) or a JSON file. (I prefer to work with CSVs but will take either). If you are comfortable sharing that data in public, you can just reply to this thread and attach the file. If not, you can email it to me at [email blocked].
We can then discuss what kind of chart or visualization you want to make (e.g. an ahnentafel chart of ancestors of one person, a descendants chart, a timeline, or something more out-of-the-box). It may take a little time, but I am confident it can be done. Sounds like fun!
I look forward to hearing from you.
